Tartaric acid is a plain organic compound that occurs naturally in many fruits such as grapes, and it has a unique place in the history of chemistry. This acid is also obtained synthetically processing maleic anhydride. Tartaric acid is used as an additive and a flavoring agent in the food beverage industry and as a feedstock in the manufacturing of emulsifiers.
Tartaric acid is a causal element in the production of wine where it is extensively used to improve the sharp/pungent taste, reduce PH level, and as a preservative. Its anti-oxidation properties make it suitable for use in the personal care/cosmetic products alongside the food beverages products.
Naturally, tartaric acid witnesses a massive demand across the globe, throughout the year. Subsequently, its market has become a profitable market, garnering a considerable prominence. Moreover, the growing demand for tartaric acid from the burgeoning end-user industries, such as FB, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic personal care is escalating the market on the global platform.
Acknowledging the potential of the market to grow further in the forthcoming years, Market Research Future (MRFR) in its recently published analysis that the global tartaric acid market is expected to garner colossal accruals by 2030, registering a significant CAGR throughout the review period (2022-2030).
Additional factors that are helping the upsurge of the market include the growing demand for packaged food alongside the increased production capacities of the wine manufacturing industry. Also, the ever-increasing population that is continually creating a massive demand for the product in the pharmaceutical industry is propelling the tartaric acid market outlook, promoting the growing need for quality healthcare.
On the other hand, stringent government regulations pertaining to the use of synthetic tartaric acid in the food is expected to impede the growth of the market, acting as a major headwind. Nevertheless, the growing niche application of tartaric acid is expected to support the market, working as a tailwind that will push it up throughout the forecast period.
Global Tartaric Acid Market - Segmentation
For ease of understanding, the analysis has been segmented into four key dynamics: -
By Type: Natural and Synthetic
By Source: Grapes Sun-dried Raisins and Maleic Anhydride.
By Application Industry: Food Beverages, Pharmaceuticals, and Cosmetic Personal Care among others.
By Regions: North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Rest-of-the-World.
Global Tartaric Acid Market - Regional Analysis
The Asia Pacific region heading with the burgeoning application industries is estimated to retain its dominance over the global tartaric acid market. The APAC accounts for the largest producer and consumer of Tartaric acid. Countries such as Malaysia, China, Indonesia, and India play a causal role in the production of tartaric acid in the region. Indonesia, China, Malaysia, and India backed by the raw material advantages account for the world’s leading tartaric acid producers which as a result, helps the APAC to hold the leading position in the global market.
The growing construction activities in the region is creating a huge demand for tartaric acid to be used retardants to delay the setting of cement which is another significant driving force behind the growth of the regional market.
Moreover, the APAC region has long been attracting foreign investors encouraging them to shift their production bases due to the raw material advantages which coupled with the growing industrialization, and minimal regulatory norms impact the market growth in the region, positively.
The Tartaric acid market in the North American region accounts for the world’s second-largest market, globally. The presence of well-developed end-user industries and their growing consumption of the product is acting as a tailwind pushing up the market growth. Moreover, the increasing consumption of wine led by the fast-paced lifestyle is further adding fuel to the growth of the regional market.
The European tartaric acid market share are emerging as a profitable market, globally. Factors such as the growing demand in the cosmetic industry and the ever-increasing consumption in the burgeoning pharmaceutical industry in the region are acting as key driving forces behind the growth of the tartaric acid in the region. Moreover, the presence of major manufacturers such as Caviro, Distillerie, and Tartaros, positively impacts the growth in the European region, offering a superior quality product.

Industry/ Innovation/ Related News:
April 08, 2021 ------- Swinburne University of Technology (Australia) and Viridi Innovations, a start-up providing advanced coating solutions announced their partnership for commercializing a process to extract polyphenols, tartaric acid, and grape sugar out of grape marc.
The partnership is aligned with Virdi’s project started in August 2020 seeking to validate a semi-continuous production process, transforming solid wine waste into high-value compounds.
Post to the validation of the process, as per Virdi’s strategy for an industry-scale production plant this deal is formed. Virdi’s ‘waste to value’ technology enables on-site processing of solid wine waste to produce tartaric acid and grape sugar which are key ingredients in the global food manufacturing value chain.
Using this technology to large-scale wine production improves production flexibility and generates better environmental outcomes, reducing winemakers’ waste and creating inputs like tartaric acid – as well as potentially creating new revenues from possible nutraceutical products
Viridi’s business model works around partnering with progressive wine producers, such as project participant Accolade Wines, to reduce their key input costs and share the value generated by selling the excess product to other customers.
