A short stroll through the streets of Baku and you will be amazed by the beautiful contrast between the city’s architectural styles. From the 12th-century Maiden Tower and the 15th-century Palace of the Shirvanshahs in the old city to the Soviet-era buildings and to the modern centers and skyscrapers. From a few key spots, you can see Baku’s entire history at a glance. In the early 2000s, prompted by economic development, late modern and postmodern architecture started appearing across the city, quickly becoming landmarks of the Azerbaijani capital.  Shi'a Islam being the dominant religion of Azerbaijan, there are many Islamic architecture featured buildings that reside in Baku.  Religious places have more Islamic calligraphy drawn on the columns and other places on the structure. In December 2000, the Old City of Baku, including the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower, became the first location in Azerbaijan to be classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Islamic buildings continued to be constructed in Baku during the Imperial period. In particular, the Ajdarbey Mosque on the outskirts of the city was built in 1912–1913. Our ancient Baku has always been fascinating with its history and interesting buildings. This list also includes new magnificent and unique monuments. 1 Heydar Aliyev Center

The Heydar Aliyev Center represents a complete departure from the traditional Soviet rigid, functional design aesthetic; its fluid, sweeping curves ushered in a more modern era in Azerbaijani architecture. The Heydar Aliyev Center opened on what would have been the former Azerbaijani president’s 89th birthday, on 10 May 2012. The museum was designed by Iraqi-British architect Dame Zaha Hadid, a major figure in the post-modern architecture of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, nicknamed “the Queen of Curve”. The museum perfectly reflects this title, having no straight lines and no corners anywhere in its construction, flowing into the shape of a wave. It mirrors the Caspian Sea and symbolizes, at the same time, an eternal cycle.

2 Baku White City

After gaining independence, beautiful architectural complexes have been created in the most prominent places of Baku, and modern buildings and skyscrapers have been built that define the image of the city. The project "Baku White City" was implemented within the framework of the decree of the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan" Comprehensive Action Plan for improving the environmental situation in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2006-2010". The project was presented in the international arena as the most large-scale urban development project among professionals. "Baku White City" was awarded the nomination of "Best Urban Development Project" at the Cityscape Global Exhibition. The project was also awarded the nomination of" Best Future Project of Central and West Asia "in the" MIPIM Asia Awards 2011" contest. In general, not only the project but also some buildings were awarded at international exhibitions in Europe and Asia. While at the project stage, the office building of "Baku White City" gained wide popularity among architects at the international level and was nominated several times in the nomination "best project of the Future".

3 Flames Tower

The most striking modern additions to the Baku skyline are undoubtedly the Flame Towers, a trio of cutting-edge, continuously curved skyscrapers that overlook the Caspian Sea and much of the city. Construction of the towers began in October 2007 and took six years to complete. Each of the three towers serves a different purpose: one is a 39-story residential apartment; the second is a 36-floor hotel; and the third offers more than 350,000 square feet of premium office space. A retail and entertainment complex ties the three towers together at ground level. The design of the sleek, flame-shaped towers pays tribute to Azerbaijan’s tradition of fire worship, the country’s natural gas resources, and its modern role as a hotspot for technology and commerce. By night, more than 10,000 LED lights illuminate the exterior of the towers with fire imagery to spectacular effect.
