New Product Launches Help Expand New Zealand Power Tool Market

New Zealand Power Tool (NZPT) has seen significant growth over the past year by launching new product lines that have expanded into new segments of the Power Tool market. According to John Smith, marketing director of NZPT, the new products helped increase market share by 5% in 2020. "The Screwdriver Pro and Cordless Sander lines we introduced really resonated with customers," said Smith. "Both helped us gain a stronger foothold in the professional-grade tools space."

The Screwdriver Pro line includes highly configurable cordless screwdrivers targeted at tradespeople like electricians, contractors, and automotive technicians. With ample torque and adjustable speed and clutch settings, the Screwdrivers Pro can handle a wide range of applications. This has made them popular among professional users looking for a versatile tool. NZPT sold over 100,000 units globally within the first year of launch.

The Cordless Sander line fills a gap in NZPT's product catalog. Previously, the company focused primarily on drills, saws, and other wood and metalworking tools. But the Sanders have been hugely successful in bridging into abrasive and finishing applications. Three models were released—an orbital sander, belt sander, and palm sander—each optimized for different uses. According to Smith, the Sanders brought in many new customers, especially smaller operators and hobbyists.

Strong Domestic Sales Bolster International Growth

While international expansion helped boost revenue, NZPT's strongest growth continued to come from sales within New Zealand itself. A rebounding economy and increased infrastructure and construction projects across the country meant high demand locally for professional-grade power tools. NZPT was well positioned to capture this market.

"Historically, a majority of our sales were domestic due to our heritage as a Kiwi company," explained Smith. "But over the past few years, we've been increasing our global footprint. Even so, New Zealand remains our largest single market by far." In 2020, approximately 65% of NZPT's sales were within New Zealand, with the Asia-Pacific region as the next largest at 20%.

To maintain dominance at home, NZPT focused on expanding its dealer network to cover more regions. Franchise agreements were signed with 10 new tool shops nationwide, bringing the total number of retail partners to over 50. NZPT tools are now sold through independent dealers as well as the company's 25 company-owned stores across both islands. According to Smith, investments in distribution have ensured widespread availability of products for local tradespeople.

New Zealand Power Tool Market to Innovation

Looking ahead, NZPT aims to strengthen its position through continued innovation. A major focus over the next two years is improving battery technology to power the next generation of cordless tools. According to Brad Johnson, head of NZPT's research and development arm: "Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized the industry but there is still room for gains in energy density and runtime. We have teams working on new chemistries and cell designs that could significantly boost battery performance."

In addition to batteries, new product categories are also in the works. One area of active development is indoor power tools like vacuums and floor cares. According to Johnson, household use of power tools is an emerging space with substantial growth potential. NZPT sees opportunities to leverage its expertise in engineering, ergonomics and battery technology to expand into this market.

The company is also exploring opportunities in software and connected tool ecosystems. "Data analytics and remote monitoring could open up new service revenue streams down the line," explained Johnson. Initial projects involve developing firmware to enable tool tracking and diagnostic capabilities. Further down the track, fully wireless tool-to-tool communication may unlock new capabilities around automation and collaboration.

With a solid foundation in its home market and ongoing success breaking into new product segments internationally, New Zealand Power Tool is well positioned for continued growth. Strategic focus areas around improved batteries, new categories like indoor tools, and connectivity pave the way for innovation-led expansion in the years ahead. With a proven ability to adapt and a strong commitment to R&D, NZPT aims to stay at the cutting edge of an industry undergoing rapid technological change.
