Different Types of GI Sheets

GI sheets, or Galvanized Iron sheets, are steel sheets coated with a layer of zinc to enhance their corrosion resistance. The galvanization process involves applying a protective zinc coating through hot-dip or electroplating methods. This coating acts as a barrier, shielding the underlyin

Galvanized iron sheets (GI sheets) are widely used in various applications worldwide, such as homes, businesses, buildings, industries, and automobiles. They are steel sheets coated with zinc to prevent corrosion and extend their lifespan. Let's explore the different types of GI sheets based on various classification standards.

According to Manufacturing Method

GI sheets are categorized into two types based on their galvanizing processes: hot-dipped galvanized sheets and electro-galvanized sheets.

Hot Dipped Galvanized Sheet (HDG Sheet)

HDG sheets are produced through continuous hot-dip galvanizing, where steel is dipped into a molten zinc bath at temperatures around 500 degrees Celsius. This process creates a thick zinc coating ranging from 30 to 275 g/m2, forming crystallized zinc spangles.

Uses: HDG sheets are primarily used in outdoor and harsh environments, including construction, machinery, infrastructure, and mining.

Electro Galvanized Sheet (EG Sheet)

EG sheets, also known as cold galvanized steel sheets, use electrochemical processes to apply a zinc layer at room temperature through continuous electrolytic coating. They offer a thinner but uniform zinc coating of about 10 to 50 g/m2. Consequently, their corrosion resistance is lower compared to HDG sheets.

Uses: EG sheets find more applications indoors and in environments where corrosion resistance is less critical but aesthetic appeal is important. Industries include automobiles, furniture, home appliances, vessels, electronic equipment, and commerce.

Plain GI Sheet

Thickness: The thickness of GI sheets is crucial for their strength and durability. Thin sheets are used in light industry, furniture, homes, and automobiles, while thicker sheets are suitable for construction, bridges, shipping, and mechanical engineering.

Shape: GI sheets are available in two main designs: corrugated and plain.

Corrugated Galvanized Sheet (CGI Sheet)

CGI sheets are formed from GI sheets and are patterned into corrugated shapes using roller mills. This enhances the steel's bending and malleability strength, resulting in designs like trapezoidal, wavy, ribbed, and tile patterns. CGI sheets range from 0.12 to 2.5 mm in thickness, 600 to 1500 mm in width, and are available in lengths from 1 to 12 m, catering to various usage needs.

Plain GI Sheet

Plain galvanized steel sheets have a simple, protected coating of metallic and organic zinc without additional design elements. They are extensively used in automobile, transportation, construction, home appliances, and civil engineering industries. They serve as panels, boards, or can be further processed into products such as PPGI sheets/coils, corrugated GI sheets, fencing, and steel piping.
